KNPV
« on: November 15, 2006, 10:54:01 PM »

Yesterday I got to watch a video of the 1999 KNPV PH1 Championship.  I apologize in advance if I use the wrong terminology when speaking of KNPV.  Some really well-trained and intense dogs.  I especially liked Quatro, his frontal attack and transport were really impressive.  Granted, I might be a little bias as my female Mal's great-grandsire is Kukay's Quatro  Grin  Although I liked Aha (Ace) Van Joefarms films that Carmen shared on this site even better  Wink  In order to certify with my police k-9,  I had to do much of the same scenario's, as well - without collar and leash.  I'm sure they copied much of the certification from KNPV.  The head instructor at the academy I went to has a KNPV 1 dog named Pitou Mal X.

I was wondering if any dogs have been seriously injured during certification/championships?  I ask this because it does not appear that the decoy follows through - it is as if the dog hits a brick wall when they engage the decoy.  I also noticed, at least in the 1999 video, that a few dogs engaged the helper on the leg during the re-attack after the transport....is this something that is wanted?  One dog actually engaged the leg instead of the upper body during the frontal attack as well.  Is the dog permitted to engage upper body during the attack while decoy is on the bike, or has this changed? Does the dog loose points for engaging the leg versus the upper body?  I am just curious and want to learn, I think KNPV is very impressive.

Hi lacey,

Thanks  Grin

and it is good possible that your trainer got most of your scenarios from the KNPV as a lot of the KNPV trained/certified dogs travel overseas to your country to  work after they are finished here with training, so it is easier then to keep partially the same program

As for injuries, it occasionally happens on trials (seen it myself once, the dog missed at the front attack and fell on his back on a really wrong way) and ofcourse it can happen during training, but I think that that is one of the risks of training a police dog, later on in practice they will also not be handled with care by the people they are used for so they should be able to stand something and yes, you did see it correctly, the decoy is not moving with the dog, but is really making confrontation....

and as for the position of biting, there are no fixed places where the are allowed to bite, only on the bike attack it will cost you 1 point if the dog takes the upper body (this is since 2001 (I believe, could be a year earlier or later) for the safety of the decoy)
Most trainers nowaday do all the re-attacks on the leg as there is less chance then that the dog misses as the legs are not as quick in moving as the arms/upper body

Thank you for responding Carmen and sharing your knowledge.  I noticed that there was only one female Mal competing in the 1999 KNPV PH1 championship, she appeared not as hard hitting as the males but was very impressive none the less, she was very correct in the exercises.  Here in the US there are not nearly as many female police dogs as males so this is understandable.  There were no female handlers in this film at all Sad    I am sure this too has changed, as the video I watched is so old.
