I haven't had a chance to visit here in awhile. I saw a post on another list about this dog that said he had won two or three "valor" awards. I can't think of a way a narcotics only dog could get a valor award. One of them was for this incident but apparently there was at least one other. I know that some detection dogs are trained for handler protection. Maybe that was the case. I just know that I wouldn't rely on that dog for handler protection after that incident. Unfortunately there are alot of police dogs like that working the street. Handlers that don't know any better think that their dog will do the job. My first priority is coming home safe at the end of my shift. I want a dog that will be there when I need him and never give up in a fight.
I would say both of them, handler and dog were very very lucky at the end. Police dog shouldnīt be just a distraction trained in bitework or not. Probably this whole thing was an eyeopener for handler. I have always belived that police dogs are more trained than sport dogs and should be since that dog can save his handlers life every day but this dog was not.
Here is another video that I just donīt know what to say but my comment would be that handler had a lot more work than his/her dog.
