Last weekend we almost lost a dog after training. Although the training was held mostly in the shade and we had the impression that there was more "air" and cooler than previous days. One off the dogs got serious ill after training due to a heat stroke. He barely made it. This due to the rapid intervention with cold water (hosing him down for over an hour) and administrating sugar. So watch out for signs off heatstrokes especialy after training when the adrenaline stops pumping
It really is a problem. Last year we had to run 2 flyball competitions luckily we had a vet in the team and she spent more time looking after the dogs. They didn't experience problems.
Last weekend we had our obedience competition. Unfortunately our club has a lot of space but hardly any shade. The dogs needed to stand in full sun for an hour. I don't know what they are going to do this weekend with the agility competition.
We have the luxury to have a vet training with us so in case something happens we can intervene immediately.
I hope the dog won't have any problems afterwards.

If the dogs are craded and there isn't any shade there is a realy easy way to keep them cool. cover his crate with a blanket (sounds foolish h?) leave an opening or 2 for air and keep the blanket wet. The fiercer the sun the colder it gets. The evaporation of the water takes energy and cools things down. As a student we used this methode to cool down beerbarrels.

I am not arguing, I can see how this would work with beer kegs. because the keg is conductive and the beer is to. but air is not conductive. the wet blanket gets cold by convection (air blowing across, causing evaporation). causing what ever is touching ti directly to conduct the cold. plastic also is not a very good conducture. but i really cannot see how the dog would recieve any of benefint of the cold wet blanket.
