We are having a friendly debate on whether the pup in the picture is a Terv (100% working Mal lines) or not...Any input from those who have bred working long coated 'Mals'?? The pup just turned 6 weeks...
Kadi? Jona? Denise? and anyone else?
Thanks in advance!

The thing is Jeff...that I've had pups this 'fluffy' and some even more at that age...and by 9 wks...They were 'totally Mal'....
The guy/breeder is convinced this pup is a Terv...I'm not (at least not yet)...and told him to wait a couple more weeks...So he's asked me to ask around and get other people's opinions...So here I am! lol
But I should probably give more genetic info on the pup...From this combination it is very possible to have a 'Terv'...The sire's mother (so the pup's paternal grandmother) is a long coat carrier...and the dam's sire (so the pup's maternal grandfather) is also a proven long coat carrier...If that helps any?

I've asked the breeder/owner for more pics and he just sent this one to me...Man, depending on the angle of the photo...it doesn't even look like the same pup and the lighting was completely different...So I know it's difficult to conclude whether it's a Terv or Mal...but when I took a look at the this picture...he definitely looks like a Mal...yet from the side...it's more questionable....So I told him to wait another couple weeks to be sure....Here is the second pic that was just sent to me:
But either way...apparently the pup has ENOURMOUS attitude and confidence and is 'full of beans' --the 'worst' in his litter (which in my 'book' is the best ) lol!
Thanks again Jenni!

Are the 2 pictures the same pup? On the first one I would say Terv on the second one I would say Mali.
I guess it is indeed difficult to say this at this point in time.

I agree Saskia...when I saw the second picture...the colour of the entire photo including pup was different and it didn't look like the same pup at all!? I will see if he can send a couple more photos from different angles and take them at the same time under the same lighting--The pics were taken 3 days apart and in different locations and under different lighting conditions...
But I think because the coat (if it's a Terv from Mal lines) MIGHT not be as 'full' as that from a pup from 'show Terv? lines'...perhaps it's best to wait another couple weeks to make the assessment...For me, this puppy wasn't 'obvious' like some others I have seen that I could conclude instantly that they were Tervs...
And I said the exact same thing...from the side it's very possible it's a Terv and from the front...it definitely looks like a Mal pup...Very difficult to say at this time.? Thank you for your input!

In the first photo it's hard to tell, in the second I'd say Malinois. The key to telling is the hair around the base of the pups ears. On a Terv pup, it will be obviously longer than the hair on a Malinois pup. On a Mali pup, it won't appear to be long. Fluffy maybe, but not long.
I also do a side by side comparison of the pup with it's littermates. A Terv pup will look obviously fluffier, longer coated, etc when compared to it's littermates. And the hair feels different. If it doesn't really look different, chances are you just have a litter with nice coats, vs long hair.
The amount of hair the pup will have as an adult isn't predictable at this age based on the coat the pup has. Even the Terv breeders I've talked to say they can't predict adult coat based on an 8 week old puppy coat.
Not the best photo, but the pups on each end are Tervs, the ones in the middle are Mali's
But this little guy was also a Terv, and in this photo doesn't look like one. He did have a different coat from his littermates though, thicker, longer, and with the tufts around his ears.
Then you get the ones like Lucky :-) http://members.aol.com/malndobe/lucky.htm Genetically he is a Terv. If bred (he's neutered) to another long haired dog, he'd produce all Terv pups. But in these photos at 10 months, the only real clue is the tufts around his ears. And his tail. At 1 year he's getting more coat, but he will always look more like a kind of plush Malinois, vs a Tervuren.
Jeff I think that is a great idee I think it is really hard to judge coat length on pictures, I've been driving to Belgium twice to go and look at one year old dogs that seemed to be long haired in the pictures and turned out to be nice full coated mals. On pups it's even more difficult so to me this pup needs to grow a bit more.
But here in Belgium (and I don't know how this is in other countries) you need to register the dog at 7 weeks to obtain a pedigree and then you have to decide whether the pup is a terv or a mal when it takes at least a year before you can be sure.

Same as with color of the tervs, out of my last litter I had a male who was grey at 7 weeks and another who was sable at 7 weeks now 2 years later the grey one is sable and the sable one is grey so now they have the wrong color on their pedigree.
In Finland we can change the variety later, if it went wrong. And in G-litter we have to, Thor (Grond) is registered as mal, but it is definitely a terv. Sorry, mal-people, it is a win for us tervists
