Apport in Obedience II
« on: October 18, 2004, 05:25:49 PM »

Hi!

I have one question! From the beginning my dog didnt like the apport, but now I got him interested so thats a good start. When he sits beside me, he waits until I throw the apport away and until I tell him to get it. Then he comes to me with it, but when I say "sit" (because he dont know the whole thing yet) he emediatly puts it down. How do I get him to come to me, sit down beside me and still have the apport in his mouth until I tell him to let loose?

I know one way...

to tell him let loose before he does it him self. Is this the right way?

Teach your dog to take the dunbell when he is in a sit possition in front of you. At first reward every move towards the dunbell and then let him take it for a second. You train him the other way arround, start with the end possition and couple the word apport into it when the sit with dunbell is steaddy. If your dog has something against the dunbell use something else at first and start with the dunbell when the dog understands the compleet retreive. This way you teach the dog retreive means : I have to sit in front of my owner with something in my mouth the dog will aim for the reward and makes a quick front sit.
I've been teaching my dogs this way since 4 years and it really works wonders to start leaning the end possition.
Good luck Jeannet

hunden:
Start with holding-training...you give the apport to the dog when he is sitting by your side and say the command you use for apporting. When he takes the apport into his mouth you thank and award him at once. If it's not popular at first it's enough that the apport is in his mouth only for a second. Continue untill he holds the apport in his mouth well and even a littlebit longer time. (Clicker is unbeatable in this...)
When this works, your dog knows that command for getting the apport means that he sits beside you the apport in his mouth and gets reward for that...
Then you can move to the part when you cast the apport and send your dog to get it to you.
