Dog attacks..
« on: October 27, 2005, 11:32:53 PM »

Hi!

Found this interesting site that has listed dog attacks everything from pomeranian (yes you read right, dog is actualy declared dangerous in neighbourhood where it lives), poodle attacking pittbull to police dogs attacking people (while not working).

http://www.understand-a-bull.com/BSL/OtherBreedBites/AllDogsBite.htm

Found malinois (police dog) too:
http://www.understand-a-bull.com/BSL/OtherBreedBites/May2005/MalinoisID0605.pdf

Boy was attacked on bicycle maybe dog was trained KNPV before going to police?

Anyway some story?s are funny because dogs that attack are small and usually man wouldnt be caught dead walking one.

I just took a quick peak and realized, that it is pitbull people site convincing that other dogs bite too, and theirs are just sweet pets. There is no need for dogpeople themselves to hysterize about bite, doghaters do it already quite well without our willing or unwilling help. Neither I see no reason to try to convince own breed to be not harmful, when we all know that any dog with teeth can make serious injuries in wrong hands. One dog made severe harm with nails for a little girl - just because child was offering a piece of bread and lifted it up in front of the dog.

I am not supporting that kinda sites visiting them.

Pitbull's ARE sweet pets like every other breed if the owner is right. Hysterize? No hysteria don't worry just concern that people who should never owned a dog or this breed managed to push it so far that laws are beeing made to spay, nuter or uthanize them. Imagine for a second that one or all belgian shepherds would be pushed to same thing. Not a pretty picture isn't it.

We all know doghaters and know they will jump up at every single dog attack, every unpicked poo and so on. It is their problem if they don't like dogs but we do.

I am not supporting that kinda sites visiting them.

I personaly support them since for their breed it seams it is becoming too late to do anything but show that breed is not "bad".

The press indeed takes care of the hysteria and they seem to focus on certain breeds (it doesn't matter that half of the bite incidents here in Belgium are caused by Goldens and Labs).

Personally, I don't like the site but I understand their cry since the press mainly focusses on their breed.  But there are other ways to access a larger public like the following:

About 3 years ago I saw part of a documentary on the Dutch TV.  It was about an animal center in France.  Most of the dogs that ended up there were the "dangerous" ones.  For part of the dogs it was true but the other ones were nice.  One of the dogs that was followed was a pitbull male that was brought in for the second time (badly wounded).  The owner of the dog had already reported the dog stolen.  In that region it was very common to steal Pitbulls, Amstafs etc for illegale dog fights and after the fight they were thrown on the streets.  The first time the owner took the dog back (owner had a little child but there had never been a problem) but now he was hesitant (think about the child and afraid that something might happen since the dog had now been in 2 fights) and decided not to take the dog back.  When the dog healed from his injuries, he was rehomed (together with a few other dogs) with a couple who specialize in training these "dangerous" dogs for search and rescue.

Not an approach i would of took in trying to raise awarness about my breed.  I we are from different parts of the world here. so i will only speak for america. In america that site that pitbulls bite. they are saying, hey pitbulls bite but so do poodles. That is not helping anyone and they are throwing all dogs under the bus. I think if there would become a stronger movement with that argument, dog ownership might be much more goverened or possibly banned. I also understand that all dogs bite. and it sucks thier dog is being targeted. but leave mine alone.

Hi!

The point of my first post was articles that come from various sources not whole site (didn?t even read the rest)!

As dog owners (I belive) we read this articles little differently than people without dogs. From 10 lines of article we manage to take out bullshit and pretty much know what happened. Belgian shepherds are already on dangerous dog list and will probably only climb it if they get too popular.

And if you guys read the articles than you will see that 99% of the time it is owners fault.. dogs escape kennels and so on.

Well reports keep coming about belgians bitting and ofcourse news just love bitting dogs especially if someone died or almoust died. I hope people will never manage to get belgians to point where pitbulls are now but if it happens I hope everyone that owns a dog will be on our side not thinking: Who the hell cares as long it is not my breed?

I do not think belgians will get as popular a pits or gemans. a friend of mine told me whe are the belgians (malinois). so we have control how many litters and whom is getting these dogs. also belgians are not the ideal pet dog for most people and i believe a bit more of a handful of a dog than a pit. I am going through the woes of having my first working malinois.
