Temperament Differences between the various ring dogs?
« on: October 03, 2005, 11:04:51 PM »

I was just wondering if someone or preferably many people would explain the differences, if any, in the temperaments between the Belgian Ring, French Ring, and KNPV malinois.  I am looking for general differences (i.e. the BR dogs being harder to handle than the FR dogs (don't know if this is true or not), etc.).  I know that each dog is an individual and there are variations to anything, but I was wondering if anyone has noticed some general differences between the types of malinois used for the above three ring sports.
Thanks,
Randall

Hello
First of all it really is quite hard to make sweeping conclusions about the temperaments of dogs based on the breeding out of the different dogsports that you have mentioned, but for purposes of discussion, let me share with you just a few observations that we have made.

From those that we saw, we have noticed that dogs bred out of BR studs (NVBK) displayed a lot of dominance. We had youngsters that challenged their handlers authority frequently and most of them required very, very strong correction to get the message. They were total workaholics sometimes at the expense of handler focus. I share your view that training them is more difficult especially in bite development because of their inherent hardness to correction. The training team members had to be very alert especially on the outs because of displays of handler aggression during  the start of release training. However, we found them to have a lot of fight and also rock-solid nerves and can take all kinds of pressure. They require an experienced, patient and steady handler and a competent training team and if all of these are factored in, you would see the dog finish the sequences in ringsport a go to competitive levels.

We found the dogs bred out of FR studs to be extremely quick to learn and bond quite well with the handler. Those that we have are excellent companions and social to strangers to a certain degree. They most certainly display a "pleaser's focus" during training and are much sportier than their counterparts in the BR . They are however also more sensitive. I would say that they are better suited for potential handlerswho are new to dogsports. Again, with the right handler, right team they thrive quite well in competition.

By the way, we work our dogs in MR, that is why we were able to make this comparison. We dont have much experience in KNPV dogs however. Hope this helps.

Regards

my dog is dutch, very absorbent to correction (pain) but responds well to it.  He is all KNPV excepting Elgos.  He has dogs like Joerie, Quatro, Bronco.  Not too hard, but not overly sensative.  Quick to learn and loves to work, and channels well.
