Travelling with puppies
« on: September 21, 2005, 11:20:24 PM »

Just wanted to know if someone knows best ways, and certainly cheap ways to travel with puppies from Finland to Holland... ferry is way to expensive, and I'm busy trying to arrange the puppies to travel through Sweden with a special license... who has some experience with this? thnx... Angela

Hi Angela,

I have no experience with puppies but I travelled to Sweden and back earlier this year without using a ferry.  Besides paying toll at 2 places, I only had to pay for gas.

Let me know if you want more information (saskia.vermeylen1@pandora.be).

Hi Angela,

we went to Finland this summer with all 4 of our dogs, we went by car passing Germany, Danmark, Sweden and then the ferry from Stockholm to Turku,
we needed to pay toll twice (35 euro each time) and the ferry was 11 euro/dog (and ofcourse your own expences)
here you can find the ferry organisation we took, on our way back we found out that it was cheaper to book from Finland

But, people in Finland told us that travelling with only 1 dog and 1 person was cheaper if you would fly, al full grown malinois and 1 person from Amsterdam to Helsinki would cost around 500 euro they told us and it is like 1700 km driving to Stockholm only, so count your gasexpenses also.
and taking a puppy on a flight would even be cheaper, because you can take it in to the cabin (under 5 kilos) or it is like extra luggage and that is always cheaper then letting a dog fly alone

Thanks........... I hear al sorts of things about it, now we are trying to get a sort of a license to take puppies under the age of 3 months, so we can traval through Sweden with them without rabies.. I think Carmen, your dogs were rabies vaccinated and tested blood? When we would go back by ferry from Hanku to Rostock... we would have to do a payment for about 600 euro, that's really ridiculous. But Sweden is not really co-operating, and changes their stories every time,, on the website of the Board of Agriculture, it says that in specific cases... puppies can be imported without the quarantine time. In about 3 weeks we'll go and get 2 Groenendaelpuppies and import them into Holland, but what a lot of things to do before we can go.... Regards... Angela

from what I've heard is that you are allowed to travel with a puppy under the age of 3 months without any license if the parents are testet and vaccinated for rabies (and yes our dogs were rabies vaccinated and blood tested) and yes the ferry to Rostock is way to expensive, so I would advise you to take a closer look at the possibilities of travelling by plane, since this is the quickest way and if you count all the gas costs and the 2 pay-bridges in I think it is even cheaper than travelling by car and you will avoid all the problems with Sweden Wink

next year we will probably take a puppy to Finland and she/he will then also not yet be blood tested for rabies so that is why we already got some information about this "problem"
the rule that you are allowed to take the puppy with you under that age is only for puppies travelling through Sweden, so not for importing to Sweden, but I believe you are taking the puppy to Holland

Hi!

I agree with Carmen that you should start looking at flying to Finland instead of driving there.. Gas money, ferrys or bridges will eat you alive till you come to Finland... + ferry from Sweden (I guess Stockholm) is not cheap either..

Ferry from (return ticket) Germany - Denmark, Denmark - Sweden costs arround 130 euro (1320 swedish krone). Add to this ferry Sweden - Finland (I guess cheapest would be 300 euro), gas money and to sleep somewhere and I am almoust sure you are traveling by plane. Wink

Start checking sites of HH Ferry (this takes you from germany to denmark, denmark to sweden) but price I gave you 130 euros I think is correct.

Here is link to Micheline Via Route http://www.viamichelin.com/viamichelin/gbr/tpl/hme/MaHomePage.htm

It will give you how many km you will have to drive (1.500 km? x 2).

Bye, Raven

As finn I'd say fly. At least you don't have to worry about all the paperwork with rabies, which runs in foxes to Sweden via northern route all the time...  Tongue

For instance in Finland one pup was returned to Belarus because of missing rabiestests and Sweden is much tighter with all of those things - of course if you are even stopped... Also one route to Holland is Via Baltica, from Helsinki to Estonia To Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and so on, but driving is maybe not that nice. I heard of one breeder going thru Swedebn with sealed box, but I don't know if they do that anymore, and under 3 moth old puppies... hmmm...

The first idea I have is that the breeder you'll take the pups would find out the way and politics thru Sweden, because in Finland loads of dogs travels to Sweden and back. Usually breeder selling pups in Sweden might have a loads of ideas and advices concerning that.

Bye, Raven

it is no need to take the ferry in Denmark (you can drive an other route which will take you over toll-brigdes, but they are 35 euro each, so less expensive then the ferry) and the ferry from Stockholm to Turku is not that expensive (we paid 104 euro (one way) on our way back for 2 persons and 4 dogs in the holiday season, I believe Theo paid like 85 euro for himself a car and 1 dog for a return ticket off season

but then again I think flying is still cheaper (gas, sleeping etc)

Hi!

Hehe, those bridges are a little trick..hehe, ferry or bridge same thing.. 70 euros for 2 bridges one way and 70 back.. so 140 euro so same thing like ferry?s.

We travel every year this route to south of Europe and we thought of bridge beliving it will be cheaper.. but actually it is same thing.

bye, Raven

oke, didn't read it well, was thinking about a one way ticket for 130 euro Wink
but isn't it easier to take the bridges because there is no time limit to them (you can pass them whenever you want and the ferry leaves on a certain time)
and yes around 300 euro for the ferry from Stockholm for a return ticket is normal (when you book from here, if you let someone book from Finland it is cheaper (maybe a tip for you for next year), the difference in our case was around 40 euro for a oneway ticket, so around 80 for a return ticket and that is interesting Wink

So, I'm going by plane.... 2 times a one way ticket was cheaper than a round way stupid enough. I also found out, the way back is cheaper if it's booked in Finland, saved me 30 euro!! Now A'dam-Copenhagen-Tampere is 165 euro, and back it's 200 euro's including a puppy. Yes, it's best this way... And travelling through Sweden can't be done, importing puppies under the age of 3 months can be done in special cases. There goes the united Europe..... So, I'm anxiously waiting to go now!! Only seen pictures, and strangly enough, I have puppies around me all the time, and this one isn't bred by me... why this feeling Idiot2 Bye, Angela and thanks for thinking with me!!

Hi Angela,

I have been travelling quite a lot with my dogs, also when they have been puppies. Definitely the best way of importing a 8weeks old puppies from Finland to continental europe is by plane. Preferable also for the sake of the puppy I think.

Would be interesting to hear what you have found in Finland  Wink Good luck with your Finnish import!

Hi Anna,

I'm importing a female out of Int. Ch. Wintergame Lalique and Ch. Noble Jack of Dark Brightness IPO3. Think it will be outstanding... Lalique with het calmness and her stabil character, and Jack with his powerfull and temperamental character, sounds like a perfect match.... Bye, Angela
