Herding in Belgium
« on: October 03, 2004, 01:42:07 AM »

Does anybody know a club in Belgium or South of the Netherlands where they train herding with Belgians?

Greetings,

May be you can make contact with Peter and Tovie Hermans of kennel Shepherds dogmate. They live near Maastricht and train with their dogs herding sheep. If you want their adress, please contact me.

Hi!

Thats nice that you have herding for Belgians in Belgium!
Many years ago, when I had my female Tervueren, I wanted to start herding with her. I called to one place near goteborg in Sweden(where I lived). The first thing the woman who answered asked me was:
- You have a Border Collie, dont you?
I said no... Roll Eyes, a have a Tervueren...and she said:
- well, you just cant herd with a Tervueren.
Lips Sealed Embarrassed
After that, I was never, ever, even thinking about that. :-/

The problem is that they have the same opinion here in Belgium.  There was even a judge of herding trial who told me that I should not attempt herding with any race other than a Border Collie.  He could not explain it to me, he just said that these were the facts.

I just want to have Yentos tested since he is extremely interested in sheep and goats and not in for example cows or horses.

If you want to test him look for a shepard who works with dogs in your neighbourhood and ask him to look at your dog. He will see right awy if your dog has "the eye"

Re: The BSD as a Herding Dog

The BSD now, regretably, takes second place to the Border Colly as a herding dog. I believe that the BSD, together with our BOUVIER DES FLANDRES and BOUVIER DES ARDENNES, is as good as or better than the Border Colley as an all-purpose "herding dog", "cattle dog", "stock dog", etc.

For those interested in the history of the BSD as a herding dog some interesting info can be found here:

Christian,

It is because in case you don't know anything about you are blocked if you don't have anybody who has their own sheep.  I checked with schools to get Yentos tested and the only answer I got was: we accept only border collie.

But I now got lucky since my flyball instructor has her own sheep and since is has 2 BC who were trained.  She has also been able to train her sheltie.

Last Sunday Yentos and I had our first lesson as I wanted to try it for fun.  Of course he is already 6 but my instructor said it should be no problem so maybe story continued.  He really enjoyed the first lesson

Well Saskia keep us informed. I would like to know how lesson goes and how you get started.
I did once out of curiosity let my dog on a bunch of sheep to see what would happen. He did run in circles until I called him off.. I know that is far from herding and that the owner of sheep would not see that from my prospective Grin

In Slovenia is very similar situation, its hard to find anybody involved in herding and they do it just with BCs. I know somebody who goes to Croatia, but again just BCs are welcomed.

Saskia

I understand and sympathise with your problem.

In South Africa we stil have a lot of sheep and farmers who use herding dogs, but mostly Border Collies of course.

We even have herding trials here but I haven't yet been able to get out to see one. Maybe sometime in the future
