Rescue Dogs Tervuerense
« on: October 02, 2004, 05:23:29 AM »

I started for a few months ago with our male "Joker" (Tirza-Phourka van Astrita Hof / Red-Joke-Macey van Lana's Hof) with rescuetraining (Roy Roland Ede Holland)

I wonder are there any more Tervuerense?

Not in Belgium that I know of since this is not a very known discipline although I think a very interesting one.  Might consider it for my next dog.

I have been training Search and Rescue for 19 years in the U.S. and am currently training my 5th Rescue dog. My last three have all been Tervueren from different pedigrees.

My dogs are all trained in a variety of disciplines. My oldest Terv is now retired (13 years of age) and was certified in all aspects except disaster. My 6 year old does man-trailing, article detection and human remains detection (something that is quite common in the US) and my youngest who is 2, is certified in avlanche rescue, human remains and disaster and soon to be certified in all other venues. My dogs and I respond to approximately 30 searches a year throughout the US and internationally.

You can see them and their pedigree's at http://bgmtnbelgians.aboutmontana.org

My young boy and I traveled to Germany and Austria last year to meet and train with other SAR dog handlers from Austria, Germany and Spain. We had a wonderful time and sadly it was reported that not many Belgians are being used in Europe for SAR. The same was said at the IRO symposium in the Canary Islands a few years ago. In the US we don't have a lot, but they are being used very successfully.

Hi!

Ok, one question since I don?t know much about search and rescue dogs.

How do you start? Hiding toys or people are hiding and than dog is looking for them? And when they find them they are rewarded?

Bye, Raven

There are many books on the training of Search and Rescue Dogs. Of course all are viewpoints of their respective authors so opinions on the correct methods of training may be significantly different. However, all are good and all add "tools to the toolbox" in dog training. I always encourage my students to read everything they can and attend as many seminars that they can to learn different methods. Usually when attending seminars I have them leave their dogs at home (as you don't want to ruin a dog by a method that is incorrect for that particular animal/breed). Even if you don't like a technique, you are LEARNING that you would rather not utilize what that trainer/author is telling you. You may be able to modify it for your use, it may be a great technique for a different dog.

On that note, we are seeing more books out there now (in the US at least) on the training of SAR dogs. Some are discipline specific (just trailing, avalanche, etc.), others touch on all aspects. A few of the better ones I have in my library are K9 Search and Rescue (Resi Gerritsen and Ruud Haak ISBN 1-55059-194-0), READY! The Training of the Search and Rescue Dog (Susan Bulanda ISBN 0-944875-41-6) and Search and Rescue Dogs Training Methods (American Rescue Dog Association ISBN 0-87605-733-4). One of the "bibles" of scent would be Scent and the Scenting Dog which is once again in print (William Syrotuck...I have a copy from 1974, not sure what the new ISBN is). I have a vast library, so if you want additional titles would be glad to provide them.

On that note, my Search and Rescue operational boy is soon to sire two litters that have great promise for producing Search and Rescue potental puppies  Wink. Temperament and health of both sire and dams is exceptional (eyes clear, elbows/hips clear, negative for seizures to date). If anyone wants more information or pedigrees, please email me privately.

I think you could focus at Ruud Haak. An well known Dutch guy who lives in Swiss these days and trains SAR only. He wrote a lot books and enough about tracking and Search and Rescue. Very readable and in dutch (englisch translations exist too).

I would recommend JR Toman also. The guy who has been known as the pioneer of SAR dog training. His books are only in Dutch. An Slovakian guy who has settled himself in Holland. He is the guy who trained Roy-Roland - the famous SAR dog with the most finds of that time...not sure if his record is broken yet -.
The Dutch SAR group in Holland (Ede) is named after this dog.

Another great book is of Hegendorf. That guy lived around 1919 and has trained dogs for the Army Red Cross. He invented the 'bringsel' system. Bringsel by that time was to rip of some bandage or cloth of the found (alive !) victim and bring back to the handler. The dog then guide the handler back to the victim.

I would think that Raven and Hunden and most of us would like us all to try to keep things a little tidy. Why don?t you just repost this post to a more appropriate heading, and then I can respond there, so as not to clutter up this thread even more with stuff that has nothing to do with the subject.

And yes, South Africa, in particular, has gone soft on crime ? over 20,000 murders a year, never mind the highjackings, kidnappings, rape (even babies of 3-months-old and grannies in their 90?s), etc., etc. Johannesburg, where I live, is the crime capital of the world. Over 20,000 people die in road accidents each year and there are over 5 million people driving around with either forged or no drivers licence at all? Half our cabinet and members of parliament belong in prison, but they are not. I go to the funeral of a friend or acquaintance just about every month. One of my own brothers was shot by intruders at his home a while back and is lucky to be alive. This is a country where you can literally ?get away with murder?. Otherwise this is a great country and South Africans are extremely friendly and hospitable. Ask MAYA ? she?s been here.

As for seminars drop me a private email if you are interested and tell us what you have to offer, also so far as suitable dogs for sale is concerned? I?d rather discuss this in private emails as this doesn't belong on this forum. Also because it concerns other parties such as the SAPS (South African Police Services), who don?t need and won?t like their business discussed on open web forums.

PS. as for a thread on SEMINARS, why don't you just start one somewhere in the training section.
