It's Spelled Tervuren - NOT Tervueren!
« on: June 04, 2005, 10:37:55 PM »

Hello everyone!,

My name is Elizabeth. I don't own a Belgian Tervuren nor any other Belgian breed, but I do like the Tervuren the most. Right now, I own Keeshonden. I stumbled upon this forum recently (which is quite nice) and was wondering why it's spelled Tervueren.

According to the American Belgian Tervuren Club , it's spelled Tervuren NOT Tervueren. Why are you spelling it wrong on the forum?

One would think those highly involved with the breed would be able to spell it correctly.

Nevermind. I guess one way is teh American way and the other is the Belgian way, which is a bit weird. Now I know what's the difference in spelling.

Hi!

Here you go:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tervueren

The Belgian Shepherd Dog (Tervueren) is a breed of dog, sometimes classified as a variety of the Belgian Shepherd Dog rather than as a separate breed. The Tervueren is recognized in the United States by the AKC under the name Belgian Tervuren.

Americans create their own names.. like for groenendael Belgian Sheepdog.. but all four varieties are Belgian Shepherds!

Bye, Raven

Yeah, I saw that shortly before you posted it. Like I said, it's kind of weird.

I think that it has to do with the old and current spelling of the town the variety is linked to.  The old spelling is I believe with the "e" but the current spelling is without the "e" so I guess the AKC took the current spelling.

I always heard that Tervueren with the extra "E" was the Dutch name, and the Belgians use Tervuren without the "E".
The same in Holland/Belgium with the Laekenois. In Holland we spell Laekense Herder, in Belgium they spell Lakense Herder.

But I don't know how this has happened, must be something from a long time ago I guess.

Here In Belgium most of the people also use the name with an "e" for the Tervueren, Groenedael and Laekenois, which is the correct spelling.

Anyway, we all know what we are talking about  Grin.

I heard on an other forum that in Belgium the names were all spelled without the "e". Must be regional then I guess.  Wink

It's a language thing. All the names from the BS except the Malinois come from places near the languageborder that devides belgium into 2 (dates back to the roman occupation some 2000 years ago) There are a lot of names that have 2 ways to write them and Tervuren/lakense and Groenendaler are some of them. Considdering the fact that the right name of a place is the name as it is written localy (eg Antwerp schould be Antwerpen) the names schould be written without the "e" and the Malinois should be called the "Mechelaar"

All a bit confusing as long as the baby has a name

Greetings

Johan

The part of Belgium i'm from we still use Groenendaeler, Tervuerener and Mechelaar. It is the old spelling. But as you know these dogs were named after places. The places were spelled this way, but now they changed to new spelling. Groenendaal & Tervuren. The dogs kept 'their' name, althoug if someone uses the new spelling, everybody knows what you are talking about. I think the only 'thing' a Groenendaeler has is that he is named after a Castle where the original first breeder of the Groenendaeler lived. It still says even now; Groenendael.

Shocked Oops, i forgot the 'Laekense herder'. That place is called Laken now but Laeken is old spelling too + all the names in the old spelling are the way we pronounce them in our dialect where i'm from  Wink .
