Swedish biteworkprogramm?
« on: May 01, 2005, 04:48:00 AM »

Hi all,

Is the ringsports a must for keeping the mal a workingdog? Living in sweden not much ringsport is done, a few are doing mondio. However we have our own native protectionprogramm, but I don?t know really if the demands are just as great there as in the ringsports, so I wonder if our mallines will have the same quality after a few generation as the best in holland and belgium if they not are breed for ringsport like there.
The swedish programm involves tracking, searching for people and articles and also bitework in muzzle and a soft sleeve. Here some videos of it, would be intressting to get some feedback if this sport is equal to the ringsports in the demands required for the dogs,

Breeding is something very bizar.
It is very difficult to breed something desirable into a breed
It is very easy to breed something undesirable into a breed
It is very easy to loose  something desirable from a breed
It is very difficult to loose  something undesirable from a breed

This means that for those things that are visible by the naked eye it is relative easy to keep the quality. On the other hand things that need testing such as is needed in a working dog always has to tested and retested in order not to loose it. The best testground for this are extreme programmes like BR FR KNVP and mondio I haven't a clue iff the swedish program is up to the same high standards. If so swedish dogs will stay at a high level if not ...
I think that you're better placed to judge.
Greetings

It?s hard to judge when you aren?t  an expert in this sport, and absolutely not in KNPV and the other ringsports Undecided
I?m just a rookie when it comes to bitesports, but have seen a few competitions and trying to learn much about it. What I think is hard in the swedish programm is all the exerzises that must be done, besides the bitework. Also the muzzlework is supposed to be quite demanding both physical and mentaly from the dogs. The difference between this sport and the ringsports in the bitework seems to be more active decoywork and environmental stress in the ringsports, the ringsports also seems to primarly work with the dogs preydrive, and not so much with the aggression that often is needed in the muzzlework in the swedish programm.
Maybe it?s not so much about which sport is done, in Sweden there is also different charactertest and policetest that many test their dogs in, besides the workingtrials.

The tiny group doing mondio here have been quite succesfull, one won the worldchampionship in MRII last year, with a dog breed from  parents succesfull in the swedish programm, so I don?t know if mondio are more extreme, just a bit different.

I for one like the muzzle work in the swedish program, that already puts it above schutzhund in my book.  I think they should move to a suit though. A dog can become focused on a suit thereby making it no different than a sleeve, but I have seen dogs (mostly schutzhund) who work awesome on a sleeve, but have very screwed up bites, letting go, being chewy, on the suit, because it is more personal and 1 on 1 between dog and decoy than the good ole sleeve. I don't know much about the program just from what I saw in the clips, so I could be off but it looks like you guys have a pretty decent program over there.

Yes, I agree that a suit would be nice, but it seems many think the muzzlework is enough and that a suit doesn?t ad more, muzzlework requires a dog focused on the man and not equipment, sleeve or suit.
But many seems to use bitejackets in the training for this sport, but not on competitions.
Found a brief description of the programm in english,

Here is some clips of a nice GSD bitch doing some of the routines training indoors, click at "Tikar" and then kickwas quincy, and last "filmer".

If the muzzles are the same as in BR i dont want to be a decoy! With the belgian equipement  i think that you would need one decoy and one hospitalbed for every dog.

Greetings
