hiking with your dog
« on: April 12, 2005, 03:17:19 AM »

I am a very active hiker in southern california and can't wait to take my mali pup hiking.  Does anyone know of dog friendly hikes?  Also when is it ok to take her on a 3-5 mile hike?

Hi,

We live in East San Diego County and have lots of friends who hike with their Malinois (some up to ten miles a day.)? What part of So Cal are you located in?? Where is your new Malinois pup from?? How old is he?

Wow....3-5miles is a long way for a puppy. I would not even consider that long hike with youger puppy than 8months age. But that's just me...

I live in orange county, ca.  I hike all over the area and than some.  I have not taken her(Stella) on any hike yet.  Walks around the neighborhood and ball at the park only.
I got my mali from "Dantero Kennels" in Falbrook.  She's 11 weeks old

Hi,

I agree with supernova.
Hiking long distances isn't good for the development of a pup that is still growing fast.
Take her for walks, so that she can run and get in good shape, but don't exhaust her too much.
Start hiking longer distances when she's about 7 months old.

Bye!

She must be from the Raptor/Zara litter.? What is her name?

I just saw her breeder Kadi this afternoon with your pup's older brother Crash.? Will you be training for Ring or Schutzhund?? How about agility or flyball?

Hiking- no problem. Puppy shouldn't hike too much (take care about bones, dysplasia). But it's possible Smiley
look few photos from climbing and hiking
