I would like to know one thing from all of you who train and compete. When you train your dog you use motivation (food or toys..) and correction. How do you prepare your dog to work in the same manner in competition? Im talking just for the obediance part. Obviously in defence you dont need more motivation. It happened to me that I could not prepare the dog well just before going to the field, since it was very different from our normal training. And also he soon realized that something is very different. Of course I was nervous too..
Before going to obedience in the competition, I always warm up my dogs with some fetching and doing short training moments with rewarding. ?(I also check that they are not in need to go to pea or poop, sometimes you can see dogs do that during the competition because the owners didnt think too much about their dogs )
My dogs will stay tuned all the way during our turn in competition untill everything is over because they know that the reward will come sooner or later... this is the idea in our training always, you must train your dog so that he doesn't know when he will be rewarded. He must be trained to wait for it at any moment. Then it doesn't matter if you compete and do not reward the dog before the end. The motivation is high enough to help him carry through it all.
If you have not taken your time to prepare your dog before going to obedience field you cannot blame the dog... I think warming up is very essential part of getting the best result out of your dog. You won't be so stressed yourself because you have taken your time to prepare your dog, and your dog is not stressed because you are not stressed and you have introduced him what you are going to do next together.

I train my dogs with food, ball and after a many months off training the reword coms from me and some times a ball. Because when you train allways with a ball or food and you have an competition and he or she doesn't get anything and YOU reword him he isn't feeling good with him self and he knows something is wrong. Try too put in the training a variation at the end off the execise YOU touch him with your hands and by an other exerxise you reword him with a ball or food. It sound silly but when a dog never gets a reword from the handler and day x is there and you haven't got any food or a ball and you touch him it is unusual for him / she, try it. The only reword you have on day x are your hands and your voice. ?And when you go to the feeld let him see that you put the ball in the pocket at the enterance let somebody take it from you with out he notising it. Ok

forgot to say one essential thing, the same as bj?rn said...reward in training after you have said "good" / touched the dog. When competing the dog gets only that part without reward, but it builds up the motivation and the dog is waiting for reward coming anytime soon...
may bee you can help mee. Mine young dog (8 months) always bit with a full grip on the sleeve. Now he is ones approached ones on his sharpness. Now his bit is a bit hectic, how can i get back to the fullgrip? perhaps by using the youngdogssleeve??
What i regcommend is, Put the dog back on a soft sleeve. Then the helper must calm the dog in grip, Ny all means not using the soft-stock. No thread from the helper. The problem that many people do is that when a young dog bite real good they switch to soon to a hard sleeve and the helper must be agressive and test the dog every training. The helper must calm the dog, Iff you want I can help you. I done it with the dog from Ingeborg too.

No, the 5th and the 6th we aren't there. Because it is that weekend the pre-selection for the helpers for the FCI W.CH. IPO in Holland. But the 9th we are there.

Bjorn has trained mine dog 5 times and the results are amezing, he realy has "gold"in his arms and knows how to learn a dog to bite withe a full grip !!!!!!!!!!!!! :Duote]
