harness or collar?
« on: March 16, 2005, 09:39:06 PM »

I belong to a schutzhund club where all the members have GSD's except for one rotweiler and a Mal(soon to be two  Smiley) In beginning bitework the young dogs are all worked on a collar, the Malinois has so much drive that the straining against the collar seems to cause him some difficulty. I played at Ring for a number of years and we always used the harness on our young Mals but at this club they insist on using a collar. Does anyone have any feedback onn the pros and cons?

thanks

Hi I use a harness with my Mal. If the collar restricts air to the dog use a harness. I'ts your dog and you should be able to use what works. If your club won't allow it that seems very close minded to me.

Hi,

I use both a collar and a harness. A harness is best when training and you look to get most out of your dog... large flat collar might do good also.
Later with more control a collar will do fine.

The pro and cons... depends on your dog I think.

I have been using a harness for my Mal's
I see it this way if air restriction is taking practice time a way then you are missing the point.
And if the (club ) where you are training sees this differend then let them explain to you what the pros are  from a collar so you can make up your mind .
Also you are the owner from this dog and you know it the best , there are always people who know better, the trick is find the people who know what they are talking about.
