capping drives
« on: February 18, 2005, 07:26:22 PM »

You have your dogs favorite toy.

The dog  is going crazy because she want's her toy. --assuming she gets crazy for the toy, which is needed)

You give command to sit.

You walk ten feet away and place the toy on the ground.

The dog wants to explode over to get her toy.

You tell to wait and 'good sit.'

The dog is looking at you barely breathing. Every muscle in her body is coiled.. She may be softly whimpering. Her eyes plead with you to give her the word so she can get her toy.

You release the dog to her toy. She's a happy girl now.

While she was being obedient, barely holding herself in place, her drives were capped. Once you released your dog to her toy her drive was, in effect, uncapped or released and she quickly realized her desired object
(explanation by dc)

Anybody on this board ever used this system to build up drives and find concentration ?

Hi Sculpa,

This is exactly (exactly the way you described it) one of the methods we used to teach Yentos to remain in sit-stay when during fetch exercises since they cannot leave until the judge has given the signal that the owner can give the command.

I only didn't know it was called capping.  When doing this Yentos is so focussed that he doesn't even produce a sound, the only movement you can see from him is shivering with tension.

well i do the same for a lot of different purposes..
concentration above all, i play games like watch and attack commands on toys or a fast concentrated stay out of motion...
we do something similar with heeling in protection training.

old post but....

you place the toy on the ground and walk away from it with your dog at your left leg. Whole concentration to your face, some eye turns towards the toy... sit, heelwork, down, heelwork - now the dog concentrates and also relaxes waiting for YOUR command not shivering thinking about the toy - take it! Relaxation with concentration is the key....

Happy to meet another trainer who think through. We need to talk someday.

Drill a hole in the ground a golf pot alike.
Drop the toy into with your dog seeing it.
Perform exercises as you usually do.
Finally send the dog to the toy and command down command in distance (as if send away).
When the dog refuses and run straight to the pot you see the dog isn't able to catch the toy (reward). You are able now to get the dog, correct and bring to ths spot where you commanded the down.
From there you start over.... repeat untill the down is performed correct. Then send the dog to the toy and you (oh master)... dig the toy out of the pot and handle it to your dog (oh, I kneel for you, my master).

BTW...I first train down command untill I am sure the dog gets the idea of the training. From that moment I start with training the recall. It's easier for a dog's mind to get the whole correction part. Otherwise you make it too complex which cause you to train unwanted behavior.
Good luck.
