Breeding bigger mals
« on: January 24, 2008, 03:24:27 PM »

I did a bit of surfing and stumbled on this site. (They own a full sister (younger litter) of my dog

http://www.workinggermanshepherds.co.uk/breeding1.htm

On this page something struck me

The owner wants to breed bigger mals quote:

"As well, my philosophy in the breeding of the Malinois is that I like to see the overall size increase a  little. A 25kilo Malinois might be a superb sport dog still ,but for patrol work it is undeniable that a  dogs physical presence due to its size is quite a psychological factor when dealing with potentially hostile situations."

and

"Larger Size! 30kilo's female minimum lean adult weight "

To the first quote: It isn't the dog but the fioght in the dog that makes the difference. I know penty of Mals scraping to get 25 kg which can easily take down an adult. It only takes one fool to try it and word will go around.

To the second quote: 5 kg more equals 20% increase in wieght which is huge and puts a real health risk on the breed

For me this policy is going against everything that makes a Mal what it is: a lean mean fighting working machine

Greetings

Johan

Great!

They can now do the same thing they did to the rotties in the US. My first dog was such - we found out that she had no right hip socket at 6 months.  Then she broke a front leg and we discovered bone cancer and we had to whack off her leg.

While she was the love of my life and taught me tons, it was heartbreaking to watch her be in pain almost every day of her life.
Maybe since some people have small things in their life they need to compensate with BIG dogs Evil

Happy New Year!

Hi!

I checked the site and to me it seams they got some idea that malinois should be GSD. If you check normal weight for german shepherd they go something like this:

MALE: 30 - 40 kg
FEMALE: 22 - 32 kg
This is where they probably got idea about weight.  Huh

So here we are again when breeders start tweaking malinois to get something they want. How are they thinking to enlarge them is another question that raises here.  Roll Eyes Are they going to go for slow way or are they just going to grab one of their GSD.

As Sharon pointed out there are health risks that come with size.

Pink Floyd sing: Hey, teacher, leave those kids alone! and I say "Hey, breeder, leave those mals alone!"

Stop playing with perfection.  Afro

Typical... They just have to take something that is perfect and breed it to pieces  Angry . You need a bigger dog? Take a bigger breed of dog with simular talents and train it .

In Finland one person wrote on forum that breed standard should be changed, because dogs are bigger nowadays. I always thought that breeding should be done according the standard and not the way that standard should be done according breeding  Shocked

But I am just showdoggiebreeder (change the standard, Dujoiedevie Je Suis is 6 mts and 19 kilos!) how could I know how real workingdogs should be bred...  angel
