Greetings from Chicago
« on: August 28, 2007, 10:41:03 AM »

I actually registered a few weeks ago, but haven't had the chance to introduce myself.  My name is Sabrina and my family and I live in Chicago with our Malinois, Cheyenne.  There's quite a story behind Cheyenne, I'll try to make it as brief as possible.

My nieghbor's boyfriend thought getting a puppy was a great idea, never mind the fact that he never talked to her about it first.  Unfortunately, he got the puppy from a backyard breeder who's only reassurance to the dog's lineage was through a photocopy of her dam's AKC papers.  We have no idea who the sire is.  After only a week the puppy was too much for my nieghbor, she is a Malinois after all, and decided to give her back to the boyfriend.  He then left for a week leaving the pup in the care of a friend who never fed, watered or walked the dog for a WEEK!  My nieghbor checked on the dog only to find her emaciated, dehydrated and desperate for attention.  She called me with this news, knowing that my family and I were looking for a breeder.  She was going to take the puppy to our local Humane Society until I insisted she bring the dog to me.  We were planning on placing her with the local rescue.  I did my research on Malinois' and felt this was too much dog for our kids.  But wouldn't you know it, she wormed her way into our hearts in only two days.  That was four months ago and we couldn't have gotten a better dog if we'd searched the globe!

Cheyenne is sweet tempered, loving, energetic to a fault and such a goof ball.  Make no mistake though, she's no push over, she actually saved me from being attacked during a late night walk and has forever earned my gratitude.  She may not be AKC certified, and it was only through countless conversations and comparisons with local breeders and comparison to the AKC breed standard that we were able to determine that she is indeed a pure bred, if not legitmately, Belgian Malinois.  I have searched high and low for other Belgian Malinois owners and look forward to making new friends and learning more about this incredible breed.

Thanks,
Sabrina

Sabrina,
Who in Chicago did you get the puppy from?  Or, who was the mother on the pedigree?  I'm curious because I'm from Chicago and there are only a few, backyard or legitimate, people breeding malinois.

Best Wishes,
Sarah

The sheer number of young Malinois pulled out of Chicago Animal Control suggests there are plenty of people in the Chicagoland area producing litters, unfortunately. They're just not part of the working or show dog communities (at least in most cases). And then there's the notable Amboy (IL) seizure a few years ago...
