I´ve heard from some breeders that letting a groenendeal dry his coat exposed to the sun makes the coat turn redish. I´d like to know if it´s true? The books I´ve read about belgian shepherds don´t specify grooming for groenendaels/tervs. And I´ve seen on a topic, that some let their dogs sundry their coats, but I think they were talking about tervs.
Try and get a copy of the book Belgians start to finished by Sallyann Comstock.it is available from www.Sitstay.com. It is full of useful information including grooming. It is a fantastic book. There are also other books on the belgian on that site also Amazon books
I’m not an expert on coats but I used to know somebody with a black dog (not Belgian though) and she had problems with red colour coming up. She started to give the dog another food plus some kinds of vitamins and the red disappeared. She also never did let the dog to try in the sun after swimming in the lake anymore.
But then again, maybe this is not the case here. Hope somebody knows more about this here.
best, hunden

There are different reasons for coat becoming red and my first thought would indeed be food. Food can indeed alter color, so can age.

He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion.
I do not think it´s the food: This breeder feeds his dogs (at lesast he says so) Purina´s Pro Plan. Lud (my groen) has been fed, for the past 6 months royal canin.
Still it can be the food. It all depends of the dog.

Hi. Belgian coat can sunburn, it takes till the next moult to go keep out of the sun, a diet high in iron will help. also it you want a book devoted only to the groen try the Belgian Sheepdog by Marg Turnquist. it is very good
Thaks for the help. I use cows liver (rich in iron) 3 times/week, raw, mixed to his food. Dehidrateded cows liver is also his favorite bait. Is this enough iron?
Maybe it´s just the sun, but that I can´t do anythin about. Lud loves to stay exposed to the sun all day long. And on the region of Brazil I live in the sun is up almost all year long.
