I know that a good coat in a belgian shepherd depends on the genetics, and grooming. The standard says that he has to to be able to resist all weather conditions.
:-\But I would like to know how much the wather has influence on it.
Here in Brasil belgians shepherds are not known very much, we have good imported bloodlines from Argentina, USA and Europe. But it seems that they have less coat then they ancesters.
Actually nowadays dogs have a little bit too much of coat. Some of the past famous studs ahd enormous coats (Clark, Sam) but originally the coat wasn't that long. The longer and softer it gets, the less it holds water out. And also when it gets wet, it takes ages to dry. In my A-litter I had those ultimate long, thick furs, and what a trouble it was to take care of them. Now I have a normal (original) coated female at home: Wash and Go! She had a swim yesterday and les than ,half an hour she was dry!

Coffee and love are something you just can't warm up again.
My dog doesn't have those enormous coats either. But like Jenni's dog he is dry in no time.
Yesterday we were talking at the show about coat and there was actually a lady who said that if she had a show in the weekend her dog was not allowed to play outside for nearly a week. I was amazed. I was competing in the pouring rain on the obedience field on Saturday and showed him in Brussels the next day and his coat was completely dry and ok.
A good coat is weather resistant and should not create a problem with drying. Also it should be dirt repelant. Once the coat is dry, dirt should come right off without any problem.

He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion.
The texture of the coat of my dog is great. So is the lenght. The problem is the amount. I started the topic to dicuss how does the climate, not the weather, (sorry for my bad english) influence the amount of coat. Not about shedding either, Ive read the topics about it too. Do Belgian shepherds, who live in Brasil or Australia, for example, have the same amount of coat of dogs from Belgium or Finland?
(I protected my own website so I cannot access it from my work )
Easy maintenance, no problems with rain. It doesn't smell, you don't need to comb very often. I only comb when I go to shows and when it is really necessary.
