Methods.... There are millions of dogs. There are thousands of trainers. Go and listen as many trainers as you can, remember what they said and use what suits to your dog best. Ignore if someone wants to tell you that you are wrong UNLESS the person who tells it is right... Don't be blind!
This video. IF this method seems right to this handler and for this dog then well done!!! I would do some things bit different to avoid some specific future problems but..... You can't say 'wrong' from few min video. I would really like to know about next steps. Maybe food will be changed to toy day after tomorrow? You don't know.... So far so good but let's talk about this pup after two years! I can't wait!

I think that no "one" way, will ever truely define a good dog trainer. In Ivan, I see a lot of my club pres Charlie, and a lot of stuff I was doing way back in the 80's. In Gottfried Dildei, I see a lot of what my first club used to do, with the waiting till 1, and the behind the fence work.
I have been training dogs since I was 7, which is since 1971. I find that it is helpful to look at the past, and the present, and to wonder about the future when it comes to dog training.
The "inducive" food method that I see being described, is really badly done. There is only an understanding of the beginning, and not the shaping and the random rewarding towards the end. I am not making fun, but since I have allready been there and messed it up, then fixed it, I recognize it very clearly.
but what do the people who really are going places with dogs....what are they doing? ivan, bert aerts...so on. what are these trainers doing that is bringing the dog home to a world title.
I think what they are doing, is using a method that communicates clearly with the dog what is desired. Whatever that method is. It's all about the timing and the clear communication. The biggest issue I see with people when training, myself included, isn't so much the method/reward they are using, but how they are applying it, and more importantly, how they are incorrectly applying it.
The best method in the world (if there is such a thing) isn't going to do a handler one bit of good if they can't properly apply it.
After owning and training one overgreedy terv with food, I'd never do that again.
After Ares' comment I want to say that I have no methods, no theories, no rights and wrongs, just one big mess I made using food to dog, who got crazy about it. And to Jeff, I have no drive in competitions, my reward is dog working with me. Actually my dog rewarded me with my life, so I always feel deep respect for well trained dogs.
And mixing things with way or another overdrived dogs, way to work with them for just pure joy of working gives the lasting and balanced result for me. I am not against corrections, nor rewarding with food or toy, I just try to balance it. Worked for me.
And no, I don't think that with these competitionnervs I have I will ever be seen even in finnish championships. If not then in the toilet...
