I do not agree with the fact that terv out of mal do not stand temperature changements as well as malinois... we raise belgians since 1979 in canada in an area where temperature range between +30 to -40 degree celcius and it is obvious FOR ME that long hair stands extreame weather (hot or cold) better than short hairs...
according to the "taking care" of the coat, terv out of mal usually have softer coat (quite nice to pet) and it is true that nots are more easely done in back of the years.... but this is the only difference I noticed.
I now have terv out of mal but originally I had terv from quoboy du long spinoy line through Zorro du Valpi(that I have never seen a picture of by the way...).
considering working ability according to coat, it is my opinion that when 1 long hair come in a working malinois litter it is true that often, he is the weakest pup in the litter but this doesn't mean he can't work ! all this depends on the general level of working abilities in the litter.
when almost all the malinois litter is long hair then the coat doesn't take so much importance....
and concerning tervueren working lines... many will agree that it is confusing
buy.... If you consider that the show lines which carries 1 or 2 "IPO 3" dogs within 3 or 4 generations IS a working line !!! it is obvious that you will not have (in general in the litter) the same working abilities that we can find in litters born from 2 "terv out of mal" where all the males in the pedigree for the 7 previous generations are world level top working dogs....
It is quite recent (± 15 years) that we can find several breeders interested to working ability in long coated belgians. I am in dog world since 1975 and in my opinion this interest in working long coat really evolved around 1990. this interest was almost desepeard since long time.
by the way, I am waiting for a working litter that will include tervuerens and groenendaels out of working malinois throuth long haired (tervuerens) born in the litters. you can see the pedigree and parents links at http://www.lescaut.com/pedigree_chiots_phoudjie_escaut.htm
In scandinavia we have events that are equally hard for a dog than just IPO. I still don't call them working lined dogs doing those events and qualified in those events, but I DO appreciate those results at least as high. They just measure completely different things in dog than protection work - and as valuable features.
I understood that Urgosh is your dog. So does he has HC or not? What does the vetpaper really say? In belgarweb it says that there is no HC and in that link with a link to your kennel it says there is. What is the thruth?

Jenni-
You must be confusing Gabbro with Bucken (Urgosh). I think you'd do better to ask Micke Lindebland, Bucken's owner. Micke's website is: http://hem.bredband.net/b517971/
Ahaa, sorry, I thought that the link is about the male, not the dog itself!
My apologizes! That really confused me, I am sorry, Michel! I go on asking, because those same lines are behind our dogs and we already have had HC in Finland in other finnish litters, so this is pretty essential to know for sure!
Thanks for correction, my mistake!

Are tervuren out of working malinois, in general, better working dogs than tervuren from a working terv bloodline?
Just wondering out loud.
Hi
I know a Belgian breeder (laek, mal, groen, and terv)--who has been breeding for over 30 yrs...and he will tell you that Tervs out of Mal lines are more likely to be 'working dogs' than those out of 'working Terv lines'....He has proven this in his breedings numoerous times. The Mal blood improves the workability in Tervs...however, the opposite is also true...To infuse Terv into the Malinois genepool will improve the Terv BUT bring down the Malinois....
Again just sharing information from a successful breeder in NA.

Just an observation. I do not have proof, but I believe there might be something to all this. I think that hair and nerves develop at the same time......I have read way to much information, and I think that peices are leaking out, as I only have so much room in my tiny brain pan for this stuff.

So tervs have more nervs with longer period...?
